Let’s face it, space is something we all crave and few of us have. I love to cook and would love to have an enormous kitchen complete with huge double oven, teppanyaki grill, carerra marble worktops etc, but living in London we are compromised on space. You can however be very creative with small spaces and fit a lot in. I’m designing a kitchen for a small space and am using many of the ideas from Joan Schindler’s tiny New York kitchen in the photo below. Cabinets going right up to the ceiling make the most of all available space, painting the interior of the glass fronted cupboards adds some visual interest and literally every inch has been carefully planned and used. I start off these kinds of designs by creating a list of everything that has to be included and a wishlist of things that aren’t necessary but would be nice (dishwasher, double sink etc) and then juggle arrangements to try and fit it all in, you’d be amazed at what’s possible when you spend some time on the planning process.

Very interesting – although one needs to be tall to use that space, right?! Looks such a cute kitchen.
Yes, tall or have a small set of steps. Nothing annoys me more than not being able to reach the tops of cupboards so a smalls et of steps is always a good idea!
I have an itty bit of a kitchen as well. Can’t wait to see what you come up with.
Small kitchens are lovely, and with good planning can be as easy and fun to use as huge kitchens, you just have to be clever with the space. I’d love to see photos of your kitchen!
i love hearing about this process… please post what you come up with! gorgeous, inspirational image (i have a small kitchen too!)
